Summer Attitude Adjustment!

Now that the lazy, hazy, and HOT days of summer are upon us, perhaps it’s time to make sure your cool demeanor hasn’t been replaced by steamy irritations and a muggy, oppressive mood.

I once read that most of us function at only a fraction of our potentials, not because of lack of skills or knowledge, but because of our attitudes.

This must be true of our lives in general. Relationships among family and friends, personal pursuits of success, physical health and alone time all hold infinitely greater possibilities for satisfaction if we will only make some adjustments in our attitudes.

Truth is – if you change your attitude, you can change many other aspects of your life!

Well . . . how’s YOUR attitude today?

It depends on what day it is, many of us would respond. A positive attitude can have a remarkably short shelf life, it seems. So here are some tips to help you jump-start your positive attitude for the HOT summer days ahead!

Act. Don’t brood. If you feel an “attitude coming on”, do something positive. Take a walk, clear the clutter off your desk, or write an encouraging note. Do something that puts YOU in control and gives you a sense of accomplishment.

Think rationally. A negative attitude can siphon your energy and cause your thinking to be distorted. Are there alternative ways of thinking about the situation at hand? What’s the worst that could happen, and how would you deal, if it did?

Start exercising. It has so many physiological and psychological benefits. Exercise prompts your brain to release a natural feel-good substance called serotonin. Research shows that those who exercise regularly feel more enthusiastic, energetic, and upbeat.

Do something for YOU. Don’t feel selfish about it. Doing something for yourself reinforces the idea that you are worthwhile. Doing something that makes you feel good will help your attitude improve and give you a better outlook on life. Begin by doing something good for yourself this very day.

Talk nicely to yourself. Taking note of your good qualities and giving yourself positive affirmations will help you appreciate the good qualities in others.

Smile. It sets the tempo for the day. It’s a way of splashing positive thoughts on your face. Smile for your family. Smile for those at work. Make it a happy day for you and those around you.

And most importantly, remember you have a positive God! If you have invited Jesus into your heart, then His Holy Spirit will guide you in your positive thinking. Ask Him to help you grow your positive attitude so you may be a reflection of His Glory to all those around you.

Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. Proverbs 16:24
