You can’t be hungry for God if you’re filled up on life!
In a recent conversation with my daughter-in-law Meg, she commented, “I just haven’t been motivated lately for my quiet time.”
I loved her frankness. In fact, I’d been struggling with the same thing, but had not admitted it as ME – not being motivated. If you’ve ever experienced a lack of desire to go to that quiet place with the Lord, then perhaps these realities will spur you on.
God’s waiting for you to draw near. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. (James 4:8). He’s pursuing a love relationship with you, but it’s your choice to determine the depth of that intimacy.
He is desperately wanting a deep relationship with you. The spirit who lives in you, yearns over you. (James 4:5 – Amplified)
God desires this relationship so much, that He purchased you with Jesus!
For God bought you with a high price. (1 Corinthians 6:20 NLT)
God thinks about you. How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! (Ps. 139:17 NLT) Now, this blows me away. God not only loves me (He has to do that theologically speaking, ya know), He actually likes me and thinks about me all during my day!
Being distracted by daily living will cause you to be “less hungry” for an intimate relationship with God. The seeds that fell among the thorns represent those who hear the message, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the cares and pleasures of this life. (Luke 8:14 NLT)
Simply put, when our focus gets set on the daily-ness of living, we’re not hungry for intimacy with Jesus. Meg and I talked about what it’s like coming home for a holiday meal. She, Lane, Bonnie, and Brandon often don’t eat much for days – just saving up for that feast. But after the meal is over, the thought of food – even hours later is not appealing.
It’s the same in our HUNGERING AFTER GOD. When our thoughts, activities, plans center on – just daily living – we are not drawn to spend time with God. The way to grow hungry for that precious and deep intimate quality time with Jesus Christ is to develop a spiritual craving. You will hunger for what you feed on.
Love the Lord. Talk with Him throughout your day. Become preoccupied with noticing His creation and all the ways He delights your heart during each day. Your appetite will begin to change. As you keep at it, you’ll begin to crave your times alone with your Heavenly Father. Instead of being caught up in the surging emotions surrounding daily activities, you’ll experience joy and fulfillment during that special time with your Lord. (and the rest of your day will benefit!)
“Whom have I in Heaven but You? And earth has nothing I desire besides You” Ps. 73:25
